AIM: The life grid is a retrospective interview-based tool used to enhance recall of past events. This scoping review examines the use of the life grid in oral health research and its applications. METHODS: Using the Joanna Briggs Institute framework, Medline (Ovid), CINAHL, PsycInfo, ERIC, MedEdPortal, Web of Science Core Collection, ProQuest, and Google Scholar were searched with "life grid" and "oral" as initial keywords. Then, two reviewers screened the records independently. Studies published until April 21, 2022, were added, regardless of language. Data were summarised narratively and in a comprehensive table focused on seven main areas. RESULTS: A total of 22 studies were included from 724 initially identified records. The life grid was used in different forms, in various qualitative, longitudinal, and cross-sectional studies with participants of different ages. Eight studies used the life grid at the beginning of the interview, four during the process, and one at the end. The ability to reduce recall bias, increase data reliability, establish rapport with participants, and ensure information accuracy were among the most commonly cited benefits of using the life grid in oral health research, particularly in oral cancer research. CONCLUSIONS: The life grid is a flexible tool used in a variety of structures and applications in oral health research. Positive impacts have been reported by both researchers and participants. This review highlights the potential of the life grid as a data collection and interview tool in oral health research and dental education.

Hammer toes are one of the common deformities of the forefoot that can lead to compensatory changes during walking in individuals with this condition. Predicting the adverse effects of tissue damage on the performance of other limbs is very important in the prevention of progressive damage. Finite element (FE) and musculoskeletal modeling can be helpful by allowing such effects to be studied in a way where the internal stresses in the tissue could be investigated. Hence, this study aims to investigate the effects of the hammer toe deformity on the lower extremity, especially on the plantar fascia functions. To compare the joint reactions of the hammer toe foot (HTF) and healthy foot (HF), two musculoskeletal models (MSM) of the feet of a healthy individual and that of a participant with hammer toe foot were developed based on gait analysis. A previously validated 3D finite element model which was constructed using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the diabetic participant with the hammer toe deformity was processed at five different events during the stance phase of gait. It was found that the hammer toe deformity makes dorsiflexion of the toes and the windlass mechanism less effective during walking. Specifically, the FE analysis results showed that plantar fascia (PF) in HTF compared to HF played a less dominant role in load bearing with both medial and lateral parts of PF loaded. Also, the results indicated that the stored elastic energy in PF was less in HTF than the HF, which can indicate a higher metabolic cost during walking. Internal stress distribution shows that the majority of ground reaction forces are transmitted through the lateral metatarsals in hammer toe foot, and the probability of fifth metatarsal fracture and also progressive deformity was subsequently increased. The MSM results showed that the joint reaction forces and moments in the hammer toe foot have deviated from normal, where the metatarsophalangeal joint reactions in the hammer toe were less than the values in the healthy foot. This can indicate a vicious cycle of foot deformity, leading to changes in body weight force transmission line, and deviation of joint reactions and plantar fascia function from normal. These in turn lead to increased internal stress concentration, which in turn lead to further foot deformities. This vicious cycle cause progressive damage and can lead to an increase in the risk of ulceration in the diabetic foot.

The internal forces and stresses in the tissue are important as they are linked to the risk of mechanical trauma and injuries. Despite their value, the internal stresses and forces cannot be directly measured in-vivo. A previously validated 3D finite element model (FEM) was constructed using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of a person with diabetes and hammer toe deformity. The foot model simulated at five different instances during the stance phase of gait. The internal stress distribution on the talus that was obtained using the FEM simulation, was used to calculate the joint reaction force at the ankle joint. In addition, the musculoskeletal model (MSM) of the participant with hammer toe foot was developed based on the gait analysis and was used to determine the muscle forces and joint reactions. The result showed that the vertical reaction forces obtained from the FEM and MSM follow a similar trend through the stance phase of gait cycle and are significantly correlated ( R=0.99). The joint reaction forces obtained through the two methods do not differ for the first 25% of the gait cycle, while the maximum difference was ∼0.7 Body weight that was observed at 50% of the stance phase. Clinical Relevance: Finite element modeling and musculoskeletal simulation can shed light on the internal forces at the ankle in pathological conditions such as hammer toe. The similarities and differences observed in the joint reaction forces calculated from the two methods can have implications in assessing the effect of clinical interventions.

The output beams generated by industrial electron accelerators should be swept over the product. It is necessary to determine the exact scan length in order to ensure that an efficient dose reaches the product and to avoid the loss of the beam in contact with the sides of the product. Another challenge associated with scanning beams is the non-uniformity of the dose across the entire product during irradiation. In this study, the use of beam correction magnets is proposed for correcting products that receive a non-uniform dose. These magnets correct beams that are not swept in parallel. In addition, we simulated the dose received by the products in two non-uniform and uniform modes (modified by beam correction magnets) using the Monte Carlo method, and compared the results to assess the importance of using an appropriate irradiation system. Among the proposed magnets, a modified sector magnet is recommended for correcting the beam path and reducing the side effect. Using this magnet for a long horn does not require a cooling system, but using it for a short horn increases the need for a water-cooling system.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common adverse effect of some chemotherapy regimens. Lithium has been suggested for CIPN in some animal studies. We aimed to study lithium's preventive effect on CIPN in breast cancer patients treated with taxanes and platinum-based medications. METHOD: A double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT) was implemented on 36 breast cancer patients in two equal-size groups by block randomization. Participants in both groups consumed daily tablets, either placebo or lithium (300 mg), for 5 days in each course of chemotherapy. The tablets were prescribed 1 day before the start of chemotherapy. The electromyography (EMG) and nerve-conduction-velocity (NCV) tests were achieved before the first chemotherapy, 3 and 9 months after the treatment. The changes and signs or symptoms of CIPN, such as numbness, tingling, freezing, sensitivity to touch, muscle weakness, fibrillation, and knee and elbow reflex disorders, were recorded by examination. The trend of outcome changes was compared between two groups during the 9 months of study. RESULTS: In both groups, neurologic signs and symptoms were exacerbated during the first 3 months and improved up to the ninth month of study. Results showed significant changes of all EMG-NCV variables during the 9 months of research in each group (P < 0.001), but the interaction of time and group effect was not significant in none of those indices. All symptoms changed significantly over the study time (P < 0.001) without significant statistical difference between the two groups (P=0.352). No side effect was found during the study. CONCLUSION: The study showed that 300 mg lithium prescription once daily for 5 days might not effectively prevent CIPN in breast cancer patients. Evaluation of lithium effect on CIPN on different cancers in future studies is suggested. We propose two approaches to design compact head mount display (HMD) systems employing metasurface gratings. In the first approach, we design and simulate a monocular optical waveguide display by applying crystalline-silicon elliptical-shaped metasurface arrays as couplers on a right trapezoid waveguide to achieve large field of view (FOV) horizontally. As such, we achieve a FOV as large as 80° that is approximately 80% higher than the FOV in traditional waveguide systems based on diffractive gratings. In the second approach, considering the polarization sensitivity feature in metasurfaces and employing the proposed structures in the first technique, we design a metasurface grating as the input coupler in a binocular HMD system. The suggested structure diffracts incident light into two opposite directions with a 53.7° deflection angle on each side. We use the finite difference time domain method to study the behavior of the proposed systems.

Over the past decade, Finite Element (FE) modelling has been used as a method to understand the internal stresses within the diabetic foot. Foot deformities such as hammer toe have been associated with increased risk of foot ulcers in diabetic patients. Hence the aim of this study is to investigate the influence of hammer toe deformity on internal stresses during walking. A 3D finite element model of the human foot was constructed based on capturing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of a diabetic neuropathic volunteer exhibiting hammer toe. 3D gait measurements and a multi-body musculoskeletal model for the same participant were used to define muscle forces. FE simulations were run at five different instances during the stance phase of gait. Peak plantar pressure and pressure distribution results calculated from the model showed a good agreement with the experimental measurement having less than 11% errors. Maximum von Mises internal stresses in the forefoot hard tissue were observed at the 3rd and 5th metatarsals and 4th proximal phalanx. Moreover, presence of hammer toe deformity was found to shift the location of maximum internal stresses on the soft tissue to the forefoot by changing the location of centre of pressure with internal stress 1.64 times greater than plantar pressure. Hammer toe deformity also showed to reduce the involvement of the first phalanx in internal/external load-bearing during walking. The findings of this study support the association between changes in loading pattern, deformity, and internal stresses in the soft tissue that lead to foot ulceration.

In the last couple of years, a number of new and rapid tests for the diagnosis of Tuberculosis (TB) have been developed based on the low molecular weight antigens from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) culture supernatant. This study aimed to isolate and purify low molecular weight antigens secreted by Mtb strain C for diagnostic purpose. The secretory proteins from culture filtrate of Mtb were extracted using ammonium sulphate precipitations and sephadex-G50 gel chromatography. The obtained antigen fractions were analyzed for their protein concentrations and approximate molecular weight using Lowry method and SDS-PAGE (12.5%), respectively. DOT-ELISA and Western blot assay was performed to confirm the presence of purified low molecular weight proteins isolated from Mtb using sera from pulmonary tuberculosis patients (polyclonal antibodies). During chromatography, low molecular weight proteins were separated, that was approximately 0.7 mg/ml of the total proteins (1.662 mg/ml). The purified protein fractions in molecular weight range of 14 kDa-41kDa appeared during SDS-PAGE analysis. The chromatographic band fraction in the weight range of 30-41 kDa was identified in the TB patients&rsquo; sera using Western blotting. The low molecular weight proteins in the culture filtrate of Mtb strain C were purified using ammonium sulphate and chromatography. These fractions were confirmed using Western blotting. The obtained results might support the hypothesis that the Mtb culture filtrate antigens could be used as a rapid and sensitive assay for the detection of patients with pulmonary TB.

Our understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms underlying anorexia nervosa (AN) is incomplete. The aim was to conduct a metabolomics profiling of serum samples from women with AN (n = 65), women who have recovered from AN (AN-REC, n = 65), and age-matched healthy female controls (HC, n = 65). Serum concentrations of 21 metabolites were measured using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). We used orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) modeling to assign group classification based on the metabolites. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test for metabolite concentration differences across groups. The OPLS-DA model could distinguish between the AN and HC groups (p = 9.05 × 10-11 R2Y = 0.36, Q2 = 0.37) and between the AN-REC and HC groups (p = 8.47 × 10-6, R2Y = 0.36, Q2 = 0.24,), but not between the AN and AN-REC groups (p = 0.63). Lower methanol concentration in the AN and AN-REC group explained most of the variance. Likewise, the strongest finding in the univariate analyses was lower serum methanol concentration in both AN and AN-REC compared with HC, which withstood adjustment for body mass index (BMI). We report for the first time lower serum concentrations of methanol in AN. The fact that low methanol was also found in recovered AN suggests that low serum concentration of methanol could either be trait marker or a scar effect of AN.

Background: Heart transplantation is an established treatment for end-stage heart failure patients, but its cost-effectiveness is under question. Objective: This study aimed to assess the cost of heart transplantation in Iran as a developing country in Asia to contribute to future planning in the region. Methods: This study was conducted in two phases. First, in a retrospective multicenter study, hospital data of heart transplant and hospitalization of three active heart transplant centers in Tehran, Iran, were reviewed from April 2013 to May 2015. Then pre-transplantation, transplantation, and one-year posttransplant costs were calculated according to the ABC (activity-based costing) method in 2016. Results: Data were obtained for 120 patients, among which 95 (79.17%) were males with a mean (SD) age of 35.31±13.41 years. Mean (SD) hospital and ICU length of stay were 17.85±14.91 and 9.74±8.94 days, respectively. A significant correlation existed between the mean of hospital and ICU length of stay (P<0.001, r: 0.754). The mean heart transplant and hospitalization cost was 3445.47±1243.29 USD from 2013 to 2015. Using the activity-based costing method, the cost of pre-transplantation, transplantation, and one-year -post-transplantation were extracted 6.5%, 73.5%, and 20%, respectively, with a total cost of 26232 USD. Conclusion: Compared to other countries, the cost of heart transplantation in Iran is very low. Numerous reasons lead to this difference. Firstly, a heart transplantation surgery is performed in university-based hospitals and is supported by the government. On the other hand, a significant difference exists between personnel costs in Iran compared to other countries.

OBJECTIVE: Candida parapsilosis species complex, an important set of non-albicans Candida species, is known to cause candidaemia particularly in neonates and infants. However, the incidence has increased in recent years, owing to higher numbers of at individuals at risk for these infections. Our objective was to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of clinical isolates of C. parapsilosis complex isolates from Iran to seven antifungal drugs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred-one clinical isolates of C. parapsilosis species complex cultured from humans were included. Species identification had been previously confirmed by combined phenotypic characteristics, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry-based assay and reconfirmed by DNA sequence analysis of the ITS rDNA region and D1/D2 gene. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, micafungin and anidulafungin were determined against well-characterized isolates by broth microdilution susceptibility testing according to the CLSI M27-A3 guideline. RESULTS: Species identifications were performed on 101 isolates, of which 88 (87.2%) C. parapsilosis sensu stricto and 13 (12.8%) C. orthopsilosis. Amphotericin B and posaconazole were the most active drugs with 100% of isolates being wild-type (WT). Voriconazole and micafungin, 99% of isolates were WT. The low activity was recorded for fluconazole and itraconazole with 93.1% and 89.1% of isolates being WT, respectively. At the species level, all Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto isolates were WT to amphotericin B and posaconazole and all Candida orthopsilosis isolates were WT to amphotericin B, voriconazole, posaconazole, anidulafungin and micafungin. In contrast, the highest rate of non-WT was observed in C. orthopsilosis to itraconazole (4 of 13, 30.8%). CONCLUSIONS: Although almost all of the tested drugs demonstrated potent activity against C. parapsilosis species complex, it seems that more especially C. orthopsilosis isolates had decreased susceptibility to itraconazole. Further studies are needed to determine how these findings may switch into in vivo efficacy.

Background: Pregnancy outcomes are affected by many different factors. One of the influential factors on pregnancy outcomes is the male partner as an important person to mother's wellbeing.Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of male partner's role including socioeconomic support, emotional support, accompanying pregnant women during prenatal care visits (PNC) and labor, and the level of pregnant women's satisfaction from their partners' support and involvement during pregnancy on pregnancy outcomes.Method: Two hundred first gravid pregnant women with mean age of 23.2 ± 4.3 were studied. Primary outcomes were total maternal and neonatal adverse outcome (TMNAO), total maternal adverse end result (TMAE), and total neonatal adverse outcome (TNAO), regardless of the type of outcomes. Preterm labor and delivery; premature rupture of membrane (PROM) and preterm premature rupture of membrane (PPROM); preeclampsia and eclampsia; placental abruption; chorioamnionitis; stillbirth; meconium passage; maternal death; postpartum hemorrhage; poor progression labor; abnormal vaginal bleeding in third trimester of pregnancy; low birth weight and neonatal need for CPR or intubation, neonatal anomaly, NICU admission, and neonatal mortality were also analyzed as subgroup outcomes.Results: One hundred twenty-seven (63.5%) participants showed a kind of total maternal and neonatal adverse outcome (TMNAO), 72 (36%) deliveries resulted in a kind of neonatal adverse outcome (TNAO), and 104 (52%) of participants had a kind of maternal adverse end result (TMAE). Iranian fathers showed a significantly higher rate of TMNAO than Afghan fathers did (82 versus 69%, odds ratio: 2.9, 95% CI 1.0-7.8, p: .01). Mother's nationality showed the same result (82 versus 64%, odds ratio: 2.6, 95% CI 0.9-6.8, p: .03). Iranian fathers showed a significantly higher rate of TMAE than Afghan fathers did (79 versus 58%, odds ratio: 2.7, 95% CI 1.1-6.3, p: .01). Mother's nationality showed the same result (78 versus 60%, odds ratio: 2.4, 95% CI 1.0-5.6, p: 0.02). Neonates with Iranian fathers showed significantly more TNAO than those with Afghan fathers (50 versus 31%, odds ratio: 2.21, 95% CI 0.9-5.5, p: .04). The same trend was observed among Iranian mothers in comparison to Afghan mothers (50 versus 32%, odds ratio: 2.11, 95% CI 0.9-4.6, p: .06). Of mother's age, mother's BMI, father's age, father's BMI, and mother's nationality, only father's BMI contributed significantly to the binary logistic regression model (n = 116, R2: 9%, p: .028). It was found that for each decreased unit in BMI, the risk of TNAO was increased by 16%, p: .03. Moreover, Father's family history of preeclampsia resulted in a higher prevalence of total neonatal adverse outcome (TNAO) in comparison with lack of such family history (87 versus 43%, odds ratio: 8.9, 95% CI 1.1-74.5, p: .02). Besides, mothers' participation in prenatal care (PNC) visits, assessed by caregivers, was significantly more satisfactory in neonates without any adverse outcome than those with neonatal adverse outcomes (median (IQR) = 2 (1-2) versus 2 (2-3), p: .04). PROM, pre-eclampsia, NICU admission, neonatal intubation, low Apgar score minute 0, and low Apgar score minute 5 were significantly more prevalent in participants revealing positive father's family history of pre-eclampsia. Regarding psychosocial exposures, placental abruption was more prevalent in mothers with exposure to verbal aggression versus non-exposed ones (9 versus 2%, odds ratio: 4.0, 95% CI 0.9-24.6, p: .04). Moreover, a weak positive association between neonatal gestational age at birth and quality of mother's participation in PNC visits (r: +0.3, p: .01) as well as mother's satisfaction from father's commitment to PNC visits was found (r: +0.1, p: .03).Conclusion: Male partners may play a key role in pregnant women and fetus's heath.

Two species of microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris and Dunaliella tertiolecta) as the biological agents along with ZnO nanoparticles as the photocatalyst were used to investigate the hydrocarbon removal efficiency from oily water samples. Firstly, the toxicities of the photocatalyst, normal paraffine hydrocarbons and their combination towards the microalgae were evaluated in terms of cell growth and chlorophyll content. The capability of algae to absorb the nanoparticles in the aqueous phase was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Then, the hydrocarbon removal efficiencies of the algae, photocatalyst and the combined photocatalyst-algae system were studied by measuring the residual hydrocarbon content of the samples. Results indicated that despite of the growth inhibitory effects of n-alkanes and nanoparticles on the examined algae, both of them could survive in the system. Dunaliella tertiolecta was more affected by normal paraffins while Chlorella vulgaris was more sensitive to ZnO nanoparticles. Both of the studied species were capable of hydrocarbon removal and the efficiency of Chlorella vulgaris was superior. The combination of algae and nanoparticles was also proved to have a synergistic effect on degradation of the hydrocarbon content of the medium. The obtained removal efficiencies for initial hydrocarbon concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5% (v/v) were 100%, 78% and 42% for Dunaliella tertiolecta-ZnO and 100%, 93% and 88% for Chlorella vulgaris- ZnO system, respectively. It can be concluded that the examined microalgae-nanoparticle system can be considered as a final polishing step in hydrocarbons removal from oily waters.

OBJECTIVE: Candida parapsilosis is one of the main emerging non-Candida albicans species leading to superficial and systemic fungal infections in humans. Candida has the ability to produce biofilms associated with pathogenesis. The aim of the study was to estimate biofilm-producing ability of clinical isolates of C. parapsilosis sp. complex. METHODS: Clinical samples of C. parapsilosis complex have been analyzed. Crystal violet (CV) staining and tetrazolium reduction assay (MTT) have been used to analyze the clinical isolates ability to produce biofilms. The biofilm's structural characteristics have been assessed by using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: All 65 isolates were able to form biofilm. In addition, no significant difference was found between biofilm quantification based on two assays at different time intervals (24h, 48h, 72h, 96h) (P>0.05), with the exception of Candida orthopsilosis, which exhibited higher metabolic activity at 24h time point (P<0.05). Moreover, metabolic activity and production of biofilm biomass demonstrated statistically significant correlation (r=0.685, P<0.01). According to microscopic observations, the investigated clinical strains formed the similar surface topography with the slight differences in morphology; in addition, there was no statistically significant difference between efficiency of two assays to quantify biofilm. CONCLUSION: It was shown that, similar to C. parapsilosissensu stricto, two cryptic identified species (C. orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis) obtained from different clinical samples, were biofilm producers, while C. parapsilosissensu stricto exhibited the highest biofilm production.

Little is known about the toxin profiles, toxinotypes and variations of toxin Clostridioides difficile C (tcdC) in Iranian C. difficile isolates. A total of 818 stool specimens were obtained from outpatients (n = 45) and hospitalized patients (n = 773) in Tehran, Iran, from 2011 to 2017. The 44 C. difficile isolates were subjected to PCR of toxin C. difficile A (tcdA), toxin C. difficile B (tcdB), tcdA 3'-end deletion, toxinotyping and sequencing of the tcdC gene. Thirty-eight isolates (86.36%) were identified as tcdA and tcdB positive, and the remaining six isolates (13.63%) were nontoxigenic. All tcdA- and tcdB-positive isolates yielded an amplicon of 2535 bp by PCR for the tcdA 3' end. Fourteen (36.84%), seventeen (44.73%) and seven (18.43%) isolates belonged to wild-type, toxin C. difficile C subclone3 (tcdC-sc3) and tcdC-A genotype of tcdC, respectively. Thirty-one isolates (81.57%) belonged to toxinotype 0, and seven isolates (18.42%) were classified as toxinotype V. This study provides evidence for the circulation of historical and hypervirulent isolates in the healthcare and community settings. Furthermore, it was also demonstrated that the tcdC-A genotype and toxinotype V are not uncommon among Iranian C. difficile isolates.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to provide insight into the prevalence and susceptibility profiles of Candida species isolated from the dental plaque of Iranian immunocompetent patients. As a biofilm, Candida species are responsible for several disorders common to the oral cavity including gingivitis, dental caries, periodontitis, and the less common severe systemic infections specifically in immunosuppressed individuals. METHOD: PCR-RFLP was performed to identify yeasts isolated from the dental plaques of 40 immunocompetent patients. Moreover, antifungal susceptibility testing was performed in according to CLSI guidelines (M27-A3). RESULTS: Among 40 yeasts isolated from the dental plaques of immunocompetent patients, Candida albicans was the most common species (92.5%), followed by P. kudriavzevii (7.5%). It is the first isolation of P. kudriavzevii from dental plaques and the first evaluation of antifungal effect of the new imidazole, luliconazole and echinocandins against these samples worldwide. Luliconazole, voriconazole, amphotericin B and anidulafungin showed the best activity with the lowest geometric mean (GM) 0.03, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.09µg/ml, respectively, followed by miconazole (0.14µg/mL), caspofungin (0.24µg/mL) fluconazole (0.38µg/mL) and itraconazole (0.5µg/mL). CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrated luliconazole and echinocandins displayed excellent activity against all Candida isolates from dental plaques, presenting promising and potent alternative for all oral Candidiasis.
